History of Sic Bo – Learning the Origins of Online Casino Sic Bo

This article discusses the history of the game of Sic Bo, from its origins in ancient China to its newest avatar as an Internet gambling game.

General History of Sic Bo

The game of Sic Bo has its origins in ancient China. You can play the game with three dice, though the name Sic Bo itself translates to ‘dice pair’. There is speculation about this supposed anomaly: why would you use three dice to play a game whose name essentially translates to ‘dice pair?’ People think the original game actually involved just two dice, and that the third dice came into the game at a much later stage.

The myths about how Sic Bo was played in the earlier times are many. Some say Chinese laborers played the game by throwing bricks upwards into the air and then betting on which side the bricks would land on. According to another popular story, gamblers in China would throw the dice under a dish that was covered with a cloth, and then place bets on what the result would be.

The version of Sic Bo you see in casinos today also existed in earlier times, when the earlier brick version was changed to the dice and cage shaker version. The game is known by other names as well, such as Lucky Dice and Tai Sai. In the Philippines, Sic Bo is also known as Hi Lo. The game is known as Dai Siu, which translates to Big Small, in Macau. Conceptually, the game of Sic Bo also bears strong resemblance to the English game called Grand Hazard.

The Popularity of Sic Bo

The game of Sic Bo is simple. In the early days was played with bricks between two plates and a bowl that was overturned. The game is nowadays very popular in its modern avatar in casinos in Asia. It is not all that popular in the Las Vegas and Atlanta casino scene in the United States. This is not to say the game does not enjoy any popularity; there are still a lot of people who play Sic Bo in the West.

While there is not much information about how the game gained popularity in the West, the general theory doing the rounds is that it gained some level of popularity in the West mainly due to the phenomenon of migration. Over the years, a large number of people from countries in South East Asia, and also China and South Korea, moved to Europe and North America. These people brought the game with them as a part of their tradition and heritage.

Sic Bo and the Internet

The arrival of the Internet has meant an upswing in fortunes for business as well as various games. This is especially true in the context of online gambling. Ever since the gambling industry established an online presence, a number of games have seen a massive upsurge in popularity. This is the case with Sic Bo as well.

Today there are a large number of members of the online gambling community who opt for Sic Bo over the other casino games. One of the main reasons for the increase in popularity of online Sic Bo is the Sic Bo table itself. This is one of the best features of the game, with an intricate design that is not too difficult to follow. The lights go on in the winning areas of the table, making it exciting to watch and also easy to follow.
