When online gambling first hit the scene in the 1990’s, it was clearly a ‘males-domain’. The majority of internet surfers were men who used computers at work, while women formed a tiny minority of those who even knew how to use the internet.
Fast-forward a decade and things are undoubtedly vastly different. Today women are just as comfortable as men around the internet, and statistics show that with each passing year, the par between male and female online gamblers is closing. Women like to take their shopping and entertainment online and internet wagering is a natural extension of these two pastimes.
Women like to gamble online for a number of reasons. These include physical security, pleasure and distraction. A women is more likely to enjoy gambling within the comfort of her own home, as an anonymous player, than walk by herself into a physical gambling location and hit the casino floor. Online gambling offers women the freedom to choose any games they wish, without worrying about being ‘hit on’ by males – sometimes drunken ones at that! – at a casino.
It comes as no surprise that women select online gambling because of the pleasure factor. Even a tiny win can go a long way in making a woman feel good, therefore attracting more and more of the fairer sex each year.
Also, we cannot ignore the fact that many women are simply bored with their real lives, perhaps stuck in a never-ending cycle of housework and childcare. Online gambling can therefore provide a welcome distraction from this life and add some excitement to an otherwise boring existence.
Gambling operators who have watched the growing trend of women gamblers closely have managed to capture a good part of the market. These companies realize that while more and more women are gambling online, there still seems to be a major difference in the type of games and sites that women and men prefer. While men love to take on fast-paced skill games such as poker and blackjack, the majority of women still love games such as slots and bingo. That does not mean, however, that women don’t play poker! One only has to look at players such as Annette Obrestad and Annie Duke to realize that poker is very much a girl game as well!
But why are more women than men drawn to online bingo, for example? The answer seems to be in the way the game is played out and the traditional stereotype of the game. Most players categorize bingo with that game played out by little old ladies or housewives in hair curlers in church halls. This may explain why more women than men go for online bingo – simply to ‘play the part’.
Another reason may be because of what naturally attracts women. Online bingo sites are popular for their chat rooms and social atmosphere, as much as for their games. Women thrive in an environment that brings them closer to one another and encourages them to chat and share. Popular bingo sites are BIG on community!
The bottom line, however, is that both men and women play to win. The only difference is how they go about doing so!
