Jail Sentence for Online Gamer Driver Who Caused Tragic Death
A lorry driver who killed a motorist while playing online poker has been sentenced to more than five years in prison.
Lorry driver, Stephen Cook aged 42, caused the tragic death of another motorist in September 2009. Cook was preoccupied with an interactive Facebook poker game on his lap top situated on the passenger's seat while driving and did not notice warning signs regarding built-up traffic on the M25. With his thoughts elsewhere, Cook drove at more than 40 mph into the stationary car of Peter Kendall from Enfield, who suffered serious head injuries. Unfortunately, Mr. Kendall died two days after the collision.
This week, Cook was sentenced to five years in prison for causing death by dangerous driving. Cook's sentence was increased by another two months due to his possession of indecent images of children that were found on his lap top following his arrest.
Detective Inspector Simon Sharp from the Met's road death investigation unit is reported as saying: "The utterly irresponsible actions of Stephen Cook led to dreadful consequences. Our thoughts are with Mr. Kendall's family and we hope that the outcome of the trial has gone some way to alleviating their sense of loss."
