Women Poker Players – Maria Ho Top Woman Poker Player

Turning pro after playing poker for only three years, Maria Ho has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with in the poker world.

Maria Ho began playing poker in 2002 and would become a professional only three years later in 2005. She first picked up the game playing in the homes of friends. Today, she is a well known, up-and-coming player who has placed pretty high in some very prestigious tournaments and subsequently, collected a good deal of money in cash prizes.

Ho has a Communication degree with a minor in Law from the University of California-Sand Diego. Like many other female, professional poker players, she had initially chosen to work in an area that was completely unrelated to the game but was somehow drawn to poker as a profession. The reason why this occurs differs for every woman. However, the love and lure of the game makes it impossible for some women to only do it for fun. Many understand well the esteem and potential to make big bucks that come along with being a professional poker player. Coupled with a love for the game, it becomes hard to pass up.

Maria Ho-Early Success

In 2007, Ho began to generate some buzz concerning her potential and present skill level when she finished in 38th place at the World Series of Poker (W.S.O.P.) 2007 Main Event. She obviously did not make it to the final table but she didn’t do to badly either. In fact, she took home $237,865 for her efforts and was the last woman to get eliminated. This in no ways was a bad finish and the amount of money that she took home wasn’t anything to shake at. Today, her career earnings are well passed $300,000.

Maria Ho has done pretty well for herself since turning pro. One of her biggest successes obviously occurred in 2007, when she placed in the top 40 in the above mentioned W.S.O.P Main Event. She has had other notable finishes. She won $21,125 when she finished 23rd in the Legends of Poker, WPT No Limit Hold’em Championship and $32,740 in the L.A. Poker Classic, WPT No Limit Hold’em Championship, where she placed 43rd.

Maria is pretty well rounded and enjoys many activities outside of playing poker. She likes to spend time with her family, sing and dance. She counts Daniel Negreanu, Phil Ivey and Barry Greenstein amongst her favorite players because of their cheerful attitude, charity work and composure, respectively. Ho enjoys the competitiveness of the game, however, believes that character and refusing to compromise should be the ultimate goal of every poker player in the industry.

Maria Ho is young and just getting started as a professional poker player. With only 4 years of professional competition under her bet, she has done extremely well. She is one of the most popular, female professional poker players and routinely shows up on websites and lists of the hottest women in the game. Ho has shown that she is much more then a pretty face but also a female poker player to be taken seriously and respected. Though she hasn’t won a huge tournament yet, she still has a body of work that she can be proud of. As she gains experience and continues to learn the game, there is no telling how far she might go.
