Joanne Liu is an extremely savvy and successful poker player who has quickly risen to fame.

Joanne Liu is one of the more successful female poker players competing today. With winnings of more then $1,000,000, she is also one of the wealthiest. Though Liu currently lives in the United States, she was not born here. She is a native of Taipei, Taiwan.

Joanne Liu-The Early Years

Joanne Liu, also known as J.J., like so many other female players, did not originally set out to become a professional poker player. She enrolled at Ming Chuan College, where she graduated and then continued her education at Bradley University. She received her Masters degree from Bradley in computer science. Liu entered the workforce as a software engineer. While working in this field, she began playing Limit Hold’em games. As No-Limit poker started to gain notoriety, so did Liu’s interest in the game.

Joanne Liu-Rise to the Top

Joanne soon began making a name for her self in the fast paced and competitive world of poker. By the year, 2004, Liu had already participated in two final tables at the World of Series Poker events. She would soon earn so much money that she was able to quit her job as an engineer. In 2005, Joanne came in fourth place at the 2005 WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic, which was held in Las Vegas. Her finish was so impressive, coupled with her past wins, that she was invited to join the fifth season of WPT Ladies Night Out. She competed against some of the best female poker professionals in the world, including Vanessa Rousso, Kelli Griggs, Erica Schoenberg, Jennifer Tilly and Anahit Galajian. Joanne Liu’s play was impressive.

Liu was amongst the last two ladies standing. She would face Kelli Griggs (the last season’s champion) in the finals. Joanne would win out. This was a huge highlight in Liu’s career and helped cement her status as one of the game’s best female players.

Joanne Liu is married to fellow poker professional, Dan Alspach. They were wed in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the Start Trek Experience. Liu was dressed up as an Orion princess.

The Secret Behind Joanne Liu’s Success

Liu contributes part of her success to reading and applying the principles in the book, “The Art of War,” by Sun Tzu. Part of the books appeal is its’ connection to her Chinese heritage which she values very much. Liu wants to give back to people in the region by teaching seminars and hosting poker tournaments in East and Southeast Asia. Her wish is to teach a game that she loves to the people that she loves.

Joanne Liu has proven that she indeed belongs in any listings of the best professional female poker players. She has won a ton of money, played well against top competition and has handled herself well at the tables. Liu always manages to stick out with her fun hats, sometimes crazy outfits and effervescent personality. She is fun to watch and easy to cheer for. Liu has already accomplished a lot. However, I have a feeling that there is a lot more to come.
