Women Poker Players - Jennifer Harman Traniello
Jennifer Harman Traniello has won a record 2 Gold Bracelets at the WSOP. She is currently one of the highest female earners in the poker world.
Jennifer Harman Traniello- The Early Years
Jennifer Harman Traniello, born in 1964, began playing poker at a very young age. She was introduced to game at about 8 years old. Her father loved to play and regularly hosted poker nights at their home. It was obvious to those around her that she had both an affinity and natural talent for the game. Even as a young player, would regularly step in for her dad during games and help prevent him from losing. Though her father helped arrange those early games and loved the game, actually learned to play the game from a female, her mother. The game became a very important part of her life and she played a ton as a teenager. This was until she was stricken with a serious kidney ailment that would eventually require a transplant.
With the help of a fake ID, Jennifer was able to start playing in real tournaments as a teenager. She quickly found out that the game wasn’t as easy as she thought. Players at the casinos were a lot tougher and the competition more fierce then those games played in her home. However, although she experienced her share of losses (many of them), she was undeterred and still loved playing poker.
Like many women, especially in that day and age, she had no initial aspirations of becoming a professional poker player. Instead, she planned to study biology at the University of Nevada, which she did for several years. She would then move to California where she began frequenting the Bicycle Casino. Traniello was able to witness amazing poker play and almost immediately quit her job and decided to just play poker. This was incredibly risky and caused serious problems and a rift in the relationship with her father. However, just a few years later, she was able to pay her bills from playing poker.
Jennifer Harman Traniello-The Wins
Since those early years, Jennifer has had a tremendous amount of success. She placed second at a World Series of Poker event in 1995 ($2500 pot limit, Texas Hold’em). In 2000, she won a Gold Bracelet at another WSOP event, in 2-7 Draw. For this win, she received prize money of $146,250. She took home a second bracelet, just two years later (2002) in a Texas Hold’em tourney for which she won $212,440 in prize money. Traniello also regularly participates in World Poker Tour (WPT) events and has been quite successful. In 2004, she won $300,000 when she finished in third place in that year’s championship. While 2004 was a great year for her on the felt, off of it, she ran into some more health problems. She was forced to sit out for a while and eventually received a kidney transplant from a family member.
Once Jennifer recovered, she was back to her winning ways. She finished second at a WSOP event and earned $384,000. That win would give her the distinction of being the very first women to own two Gold Bracelets (WSOP). Jennifer’s outstanding and consistent high level of play has earned her the respect of her peers. Fellow poker greats, Daniel Negreanu and Doyle Brunson count her as not only one of the best female players in the game but one of the best players period. She even contributed to Brunson’s Texas Hold’em instructional book, “Super System II.”
