Women poker players are quickly earning the respect that they deserve in the online and land poker world.

Today, women are amongst the fasting growing sector of poker players. More female players then ever before, are learning to play the game, turning professional and are going head-to-head with some of the world’s best male players. Women poker players are holding their own on the felt and changing the view of women in the world of poker. A book written by Simon Baron-Cohen, a professor from Cambridge University, titled “The Essential Difference” provides clues into why women might make good poker players. He found that women typically are better at picking up clues from non-verbal communication. This may allow them to more accurately pick up tells, even online. He found that women also tend to be more patient and observing. They are often better able to assess the other players and the situation before jumping right in and playing. Women are also more apt to show indirect aggression and may be why many more are beginning to play online then in live tournaments. A YouGov study has shown that women make up 30%-40% of online players while they are only 5% of the total players that compete in live games, which supports this contention.
