Clonie Gowen is known as an excellent poker player but also as the woman taking on Full Tilt Poker. Read about her here.
Cycalona Gowen (her name was inspired by a storm), goes by the nickname Clonie. If you are a poker fan, you are probably know of her by that name. Raised in Oklahoma, today Gowen resides in Dallas, Texas. She was introduced to the game of poker by the father of her boyfriend and became so enamored with it that she would travel to Shreveport, Louisiana in her spare time to play.
Gowen proved pretty early on to be an exceptional player, ranking in the top ten at the Costa Rica Classic-A World Poker Tour event. She would go on to win the 2003 season of WPT Ladies’ Night.
Since then, she has taken on the job as a commentator for a number of very prestigious events, including the Ultimate Poker Challenge, The Women’s Poker U.K. Open (888.com) and The Gaming Club World Championship. She also writes a column for “All In” magazine.
On the felt, Gowen has made a name for herself by competing in and earning high finishes in a number of well known events. She won three ‘Poker After Dark’ titles. Gown is only 1 of 2 players to accomplish this, Johnny Chan, being the other. During ‘Ladies Week’ she won an impressive $120,000.
Though Gowen’s career would undoubtedly be considered a success, it hasn’t been without some controversy and challenges. She was once a member of the Full Tilt Poker team, but later filed a lawsuit against the company for Unjust Enrichment and Breach of Contract. The list of defendants is long and includes in part, other members of Full Tilt, such as Phil Ivey, Jennifer Harman and Patrick Antonius (amongst others), the company’s founders and various other groups and companies.
Here is a little background on what supposedly went down. Clonie was invited to join Full Tilt Poker in 2007 by Howard Lederer. In exchange for a 1% stake in the company, she would offer her services as a promoter and representative. In 2007, every one of the Full Tilt Poker members received distribution chicks, except for Gowen. When she complained, she was offered a paltry $250,000. She declined because she believed that she deserved more, much more. Clonie thought that she was owed $4 million and should have a $40 million stake in the company. Full Tilt obviously disagrees. Though there may have been a verbal commitment (there is dispute on this point), there was not a written one.
Clonie Gowen has earned more then $1,500,000 as a professional poker player. She has had a very successful and illustrious career. Gowen has proven that it doesn’t matter whether you are a man or woman. Anyone who has a natural affinity for the game, commits to learning as much as they can, practicing and putting in an appropriate amount of time, has a chance of becoming a success. It is not necessary to have had a lifelong dream of becoming a poker professional. In fact, before turning pro, Gowen was the owner of a travel agency. Today, not only is she one of the top female poker players, she is the mother of two children and an avid scuba diver. It seems that everything turned out pretty ok.
