A look at what a poker network is, the types of poker networks, and how they are beneficial.
Ever since the gambling industry went online, there has been a proliferation of online poker rooms across the Internet. While some of these rooms are independent entities, you will find some rooms stating that they are part of a poker network. This brings us to the first question: what is a poker network? A poker network is basically a set of online poker rooms that are driven by software developed by the same provider.
Now that we know what a poker network is, let us discuss what a skin is. ‘Skin’ is the term used to refer to a poker room that is part of an online poker network. For instance, if Action Poker is a room that is part of the Action poker network, then it would be referred to as a skin of the Action poker network.
There are basically two different types of online poker networks. A poker network can be an independent network, i.e. one that has no affiliation with any of the companies providing/developing online gaming software. In most cases, such a network will develop its own proprietary software and use it to power the different rooms on it.
The second type of poker network is the one run by online gaming software development companies. These networks are usually bigger and use software from known online gaming software developers. You will find a fair sprinkling of both these types.
With the basics about poker networks discussed, the next question that pops up is ‘How beneficial is a poker network?’ Actually a poker network provides benefits not just to the players but also to the different rooms on the network. We will first discuss how poker networks benefit players.
The major benefit that poker networks offer players is accessibility. If a player plays in an independent poker room, his access is limited to just that single room, i.e. he cannot use the id he gets on registering with that room to access other poker rooms. That is where a poker network is such a big difference-maker.
By registering with a poker room that is part of a poker network, a player is able to gain access to all the different rooms on the network. Basically, the player can use the single point of access to reach out to and play at multiple poker rooms on the network. He can also avail the promotions on the other rooms on the network, some of which may be far better than what he was offered at the room he registered an account in.
If access was the benefit for players on an online poker network, the benefit for the poker rooms on a network is traffic. All the rooms on a poker network can lay claim to the traffic that flows on the network. That is a major benefit because more traffic means increased popularity and also a simultaneous increase in revenues for the poker room.
