US Poker Championship - Major Poker Tournament

The US Poker championship is a yearly event comprising a series of poker tournaments peaking with a $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold’em championship.

What The US Poker Championships is All About

Each year the US Poker Championship begins in September and goes through to October, comprising a whole slew of poker tournaments. Not as big or infamous as the World Poker Tour (WPT) or World Series of Poker (WSOP), the US Poker Championship still nonetheless is extremely popular and still attracts some of the world’s top poker players. It takes place at the Trump Taj Mahal in New Jersey and began in 1996. This poker room is one of the most used throughout Atlantic City.

What Goes On at the US Poker Championships

Every day, for more than three weeks, there are poker tournaments taking place. The usual culprits are involved: Seven Card Stud poker, Omaha poker, Texas Hold’em poker, Seven Card Stud High Low poker, Seniors No Limit Texas Hold’em poker tournament, Ladies No Limit Texas Hold’em poker tournament and an H.O.S.E. poker tournament (an acronym for Texas Hold’em, Omaha High Low, Seven Card Stud and Seven Card Stud High Low). The buy in is much more doable for this tournament than for the more famous WSOP and WPT. It is a mere $300-$1,000, making it much more accessible for many more poker players. The final part of the tournament is a four day $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold’em poker championship.

Build Up to The US Poker Championships

There is quite a build up to the US Poker Championships. Indeed for about a month prior to them, the venue begins holding weekend satellite tournaments. These are available every day and can be very exciting for players. When the tournaments do begin they start off strong with a Texas Hold’em Poker tournament. By the second week of action there are many more participants than the first week. The Main Event of the US Poker Championship is the four day No Limit Texas Hold’em tournament. This starts in October and is extremely exciting and is broadcast on national television.

What Is Special About the US Poker Championships?

The question that might be asked is, why bother with this tournament when there is the WSOP and WPT around? While it is true that the US Poker Championships will never be as prestigious as the WSOP, they do have something on the WPT in that the location – the Taj Mahal – is very comfortable with tournaments as they have been occurring there for more than a decade. This gives them a bit of a step up as they really know what they are doing there. In addition, players at this tournament are entitled to choose their own game (which is definitely not a given at the other major tournaments). There may not be as much cash available to win at the other tournaments, but it’s not something that you’re going to be using in change either.
