Different Online Gaming Jurisdictions – An Introduction |
All online casinos and gambling websites need to be monitored by certain regulatory bodies. The regulation is important for two reasons:
- It ensures that the online gambling organization is totally legal and safe
- It gives players the confidence to play freely without fear of being cheated
Each regulatory body falls within a specific gaming jurisdiction. There are a number of different online gaming jurisdictions today. Every online casino and gambling organization is regulated by an organization under one of these jurisdictions. A Brief Look at the Different Online Gaming Jurisdictions |
- Antigua and Barbuda – This was one of the first online gaming jurisdictions, and was set up in 1994. Currently, over 150 online casinos have their licenses from this jurisdiction. All online casinos operating under this jurisdiction are called ‘financial institutions’, and have to follow the law under the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AML) and the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF).
- Kahnawake – This is one of the largest jurisdictions in North America, with approximately 60% of the online casinos in the world getting their licenses from this jurisdiction.
- Curacao – Off the Venezuelan coast, Curacao is another online gaming jurisdiction. It is part of the Netherlands Antilles, and gives out licenses to applicants once they register with the country. The licensing process stretches over a period of over six weeks and includes a probe into the license applicant by the country’s Department of Justice.
- Costa Rica – The Costa Rica jurisdiction is also fairly large, with over 200 online gambling organizations falling under this jurisdiction. However, surprisingly, there is no specific legislation in Costa Rica pertaining to online gambling.
- Malta – Malta is another online gaming jurisdiction that attracts traffic because of its open market economy and great economic climate – high standard and low cost of living, reduced inflation, and stable currency.
- Gibraltar – A number of online gaming organizations obtain their licenses from the jurisdiction of Gibraltar. The 1967 Companies (Taxation and Concessions) Ordinance Act has been instrumental in drawing organizations to this jurisdiction.
- Isle of Man – A number of online casinos and gaming outfits have their license from the Isle of Man. It was the first jurisdiction to come up with a set of legislations for the benefit of online gambling organizations and their customers in 2001.
- United Kingdom – The regulatory authority for gambling in this jurisdiction is the Gambling Commission, which also advises the government on gambling in the country. A number of casinos are now hosting their servers within this jurisdiction.
